2020 What Will the Garden Be?

Gardening Jones talks about planning the garden for 2020.

And so it begins.

Every year it seems that no sooner is the garden planned out and the seedlings started, that something comes along to change it.

Well, let me preface that by saying that as an admitted gardenaholic, I am very likely planning much sooner than I should be. Can't help it.

And so it was this past season that when the plans were all set himself decided to retire. Remember those 70 tomatoes?

A lot of good came of it though. About 150 pints of good, actually. And better yet, he decided that maybe, just maybe, he likes winter squash after all.

So, even though it is early, the plans are being made for the upcoming season:

1. Less tomatoes. We're looking at just having the 20 that have a spot in the front yard, and perhaps a few of our favorites in containers. After all, we do have those 70 buckets.

2. More squash. Especially container varieties, and others that can be trained. See #1.

3. More onions. We didn't plant any this year because we have a fairly established bed of walking onions. It's just not the same as having homegrown onions all year, though. Plus, now that he's canning...

4. More peppers. Both hot and sweet, peppers are pretty easy to grow in containers. Especially when a certain someone is retired and already used to taking care of a lot of containers. 😉

5. Celery. I only grew it a few times, and stopped when it became just the 2 of us and only eating 1-2 meals at home. Now that I bring my lunch to work and he's home all day, it's time to get back to it. Fresh celery bears little resemblance to what you get in the grocery store. You have to taste for yourself to really appreciate the difference. Try it.

6. More beets. I only grew a few this year because he doesn't like them.
Well, that has changed, too.

7. More eggplant. I only started 1 plant because I didn't know he would be home cooking. For growing in containers, try this All-America Select Winner.

8. Some potatoes. We stopped growing them when we went low-carb a few years ago, but realize now it doesn't mean we shouldn't have any. Woohoo!

9. Less turnips and rutabagas and more carrots; less kale and more swiss chard. Seriously.

10. The same amount of cucumbers, about 12. This made for a good amount of pickles and sweet relish, and they did very well using this cage as a trellis. Himself is already looking into getting a few more.

Uh oh, I think he's becoming addicted too. 😀
